World Alzheimer’s Day

Memory loss. Whether it’s a loved one, a neighbor, or yourself, most of us are familiar with what having this diagnosis brings. Perhaps you are lucky enough to not be touched, personally. Still, no doubt, you have heard about the over 5.3 million people who are living in the United States with Alzheimer’s disease today.

September 21 has been set aside as World Alzheimer’s Day. This is a day dedicated to raising advocacy regarding disease awareness. We can all agree that more, much more, must be done. We need to educate more, learn more, care more, and make more funds available for research.

That’s a good start, but it’s just not enough. Those more than 5.3 million individuals need assistance, TODAY. Your mom, your husband, your neighbor…that one person in YOUR life, matters.

We all matter. Basic needs must be fulfilled for all of us, the need for food, water, shelter and clothing. Isn’t there more though? As individuals don’t we all need to feel loved, to give love, to have a sense of belonging and to feel like we contribute to our environment and community?

There is no magic cure for Alzheimer’s disease specifically, or dementia in general. The time is now. The time is today. Not just today, on World Alzheimer’s Day, but today and going forward each day.

Have a voice, show you care. This disease may leave someone rendered with an inability to remember, but we remember! Be the one who takes time to reminisce, to record their life, to preserve their memories. Learn how to enable that individual to continue to remain active performing activities they enjoy at a level they can feel productive and be successful. It’s up to you. It’s up to me. It’s only possible when we all work together for the best quality of life, today.
